ABOUT CS = control synthesizer. - a CS with memory, it's quite like the CS30 and CS15 with one channel but with memory. memory? well that means: once saved you will not re-edit it, if you want to change the release rate only you need to reprogram it from scratch. Front242 used it on their earlier works.
ABOUT Speicherbar, daher das "m" im Namen, CS = control synthesizer. Erinnert in der Struktur an den CS30 und CS15. gespeichtert im CS40m-sinne heisst leider auch: Abrufen, nicht ändern! Einmal eingestellt, bleibt es auch so, ansonsten muss man den Sound neu einstellen und dann speichern, auch wenn nur ein Release geändert werden sollte.. genutzt von F242 auf frühen Werken.

DETAILS the ringmod has an extra OSC (sine) that isnt tracked by keyboard (most other synths use the main VCOs as ringmod sources). all envs can be switched to 5x the speed. (really fast and ambient speed), fast LFO. LFO waveform can be chosen at the destination, so the filter can have a different waveform from the same LFO! unconventional CV (close to Hz/oct but it is different still).
DETAILS der Ringmodulator hat einen eigenen festen Sinus-Oszillator (ohne Keytracking),dadurch anders als bei anderen Synthesizern. alle envs haben speed schalter x5 sie sind sehr schnell in normalstellung LFO Wellenformen werden am Ziel gewählt, so kann ein LFO am Filter eine andere Wellenform annehmen als zB beim VCO1. unkonventionelle CV steuerung: ein bisschen wie Hz/oct, aber nicht exakt..

Yamaha wasn't the first synth maker but after the monsterous and heavywight CS80 the DX7 was a little revolution in sound (FM synthesis and much more realistic sounds) and sold very very well, later innovations like physical modeling did not even hit the sales of later FM synths like the SY99 or FS1R. Yamaha owns Steinberg and SCI (Sequential Circuits) and the Prophet name and had about 40% of Korg for a time.

THE MANUFACTURER
Yamaha war schon früh Musikinstrumentenhersteller, stieg aber erst 1974 mit einem Synthesizer ein, wirklich aufmerksam wurde man nach dem CS80 Monstersynthesizer vorallem durch den sehr gut verkauften DX7, dessen FM die Klänge der noch analogen Welt die Leute an "realistische Sounds" und irre dynamisch spielbar denken lies. Innovation gab es auch mit dem Physical Modelling Synthesizer VP1 und VL1, jedoch waren die kommerziell bei Weitem nicht so erfolgreich. Yamaha gehört heute auch Steinberg. Sie waren auch eine Zeit lang Eigner von Korg (40%) und hält den Namen Prophet / Sequential Circuits
