THE ENSONIQ HYBRID SYNTHESIZERS
ESQ1 - ESQ-M (rack) are the predecessors of the SQ80, the difference between them is simple:
1) the poly pressure keyboard (the esq has no AT at all)
2) more waveforms (some digital gritty stuff)
3) some small changes to the ENV section (if an R is displayed the SQ80 simulates some sort of "reverb",, well funny these days, huh?)

both are 3 OSCed ROM waves with 8bit , anyway it can sound real nice and soft, it has 3 LFOs and 4 ENVs, and sync and AM for "dirtier" sounds. the concept is much of the xpander , the usier interface is a big display and softknobs around it.. just hit the section (eg. filter) and then the parameter name and move the data slider..
the VCF is an analog 24dB/LPF
all OSCs can be modulated because they all have their own VCA!!
AND NOW .. the tricks that can be done on this machine.. some kind of "wavesequencing"..
this is about sick/strange rythmic (Wave?-)Sequences with Ensoniqs SQ80, (ESQ1, ESQ-M is ok, but limited) by using the OSCillators (only).. as found on my Consequence Volition CD

I know , you do not have it handy.. so listen to this
by switching on (or off) AM or SYNC the waveforms can create new spectrum of sounds.. by switching AM or SYNC on you can make one shot samples (non looped) to be played one after another. The result is a loop "sequence" that can be modulated in many ways...
With DCA and VCF "through" (Cutoff 127,Q=0 / DCA/ENV4 Envelopes all Levels to max.) you can check the basics
..after that you can use Filters to shape these "lowerthanlowBit" Oscillatorloops with some Q (Resonance)
basic settings:
OSC1: OCT=0, Semi=0, Fine=0, Wave: Organ, Mods 1 and 2=Off
OSC2: OCT=0, Semi=0, Fine=0, Wave: TomTom, Mods 1 and 2=Off
DCA2 Level=63 (Max)
DCA1 Level=not important
DCA3 Level=0 (can be used later but now use 0)
DCA Mods 1-3= all "Off"
Modes: AM=on, Sync=off,Restart Cyc und Osc= off. (otherwise you hear a constant sound!!), VC und ENV=on
other LFOs / ENVs: doesn´t matter!
press the 2nd C - (C2)!!
change the loop but not the rhyhtm: change OSC1´s waveform (they should be looped (no "one shot" waveform here!).. some others will do the job, too) e.g. Voice1: the sound becomes more "digital", Bell will make it more melodic/tonal...
The newer Waves (the ones that are not in the ESQ) are always cool, as "Grit1" on OSC1, sounds like FM!! (Modulation by fast LFOs or
ENVelopes. OSC1 produces real cool & sick output).
change the rhyhtm now? ok! same settings as above but OSC2 Wave should be eg: "Snare"!
Mods for OSC1: for eg. Wheel -ctrl (...), amount: 63 and bend the wheel!!
now we press button.. no - stop it! .. try to make your own experiments!!..
who wants to be inspired: listen to (Consequence) CD "volition" where you can hear what could be done..
perhaps that "asian" Sound on Track 9 (Definition Factor f:*.*), the SyncSound (same Track), or Track 2 (>transform<) are good for further inspiration...?

you can do some cool things with in "Modes" Menu with SYNC (try other Waves..), that typical Pitchmod (on one OSC) of course..

you currently hear my SQ DEMOSOUNDS -> RUNNING NOW!!! of course there are many soundbites using thise trick on my CD ConseQuencE "volition" (get/order it or/and listen to the demos in the audio section..)
btw: I could reprogram most of my old SQ80 (sync-)sounds on my Waldorf Microwave XT.. but these "consequencer"-sounds are a specialty of the (e)SQ series.. but I was happy to "save" the others via SQ->brain->XT "interface" :-)

UNTERSCHIED zwischen SQ80 und ESQ1 bzw ESQ-M:

der SQ80 hat mehr wellenformen, polyphonen aftertouch und diskettenlaufwerk.
man kann auch den Trick zum wellendruchfahren besser ausfahren.. (zu hören auf CD ConseQuence volition)
generell gibt es im SQ80 noch eine "R" einstellung in den hüllkurven,die eine art reverb simulieren soll.. das klappt auch
nunja.. das sollte man nicht überbewerten. dennoch ist der SQ80 durchaus lohnenswert erweitert. der ESQ-M hat eine "hälfte" des displays des esq1, damit ist die nedienung nicht so perfekt wie beim ESQ 1 / SQ 80, denn hier hat man a la Xpander unter (und auch über dem display einen taster für jeden parameter.. also: filter drücken und alle filterparamter stehen auf dem display. nurnoch den passenden knopf drücken und den data regler schieben).. beim ESQ-M (die Rackversion) ist das durch die halbierung nunmal mit nocheinem arbeitsschritt verbunden.. daher ist die key-version vorzuziehen!..
achja: der SQ80 und ESQ1
sind im EBM und Industrial sektor sehr gefragt, die liegt an seinem besonderen klang: wellenformen mit "lofi" klang aber mit analogen filtern geben ihm schnell die möglichkeit typische ebm sounds zu erzeugen,da der nötige "dreck" leicht zu machen ist..
TECHNISCHES - was können die ESQ und SQ80 syntheiszer?
die SQ / ESQ synthesizer haben eine reiche auswahl an modulationsmöglichkeiten: 4 ENVs,3 LFOs, die VCAs der 3 einzelOSCs können ebenfalls mit diesen möglichkeiten moduliert werden!.. sync, AM und layermöglichkeit, 8 fach multitimbral und sequencer. also schon eine "kleine workstation".

Besonders in den Übergangstracks wurde dieser SQ-Trick besonders eingesetzt.. hören! (im hintergrund sind ein paar demos wie sowas klingen könnte)

Die Wellenformen im SQ koennen durch einschalten der AM oder SYNC - Funktion dazu gebracht werden, nicht nur neue Spektren zu erzeugen, sondern die "One Shot
Samples" werden hintereinander abgespielt.. Das Ergebnis: Es gibt ein rhythmisches Loop, welches man vielfaeltig verändern kann und somit auch die Rhythmik!!
Bei DCA und VCF auf "Durchzug" (Cutoff 127,Q=0 / DCA/ENV4 Huellkurve alle Levels auf Max.) kann man zunaechst Grundsaetzliches ausprobieren, danach aber
sollte man Filterverlaeufe etc. einbauen, eine WasweisichwiewenigBit - Drum(oder besser sound-)Loop mit Filtern und etwas Resonanz (Q) und langsame LFOs / Hüllkurven wirkt Wunder!!
(Eine Taste druecken und Minutenlang Spaß haben)
Die OSC Grundeinstellungen:
OSC1:
OCT=0, Semi=0, Fine=0, Wave: Organ, Mods 1 und 2=Off
OSC2:
OCT=0, Semi=0, Fine=0, Wave: TomTom, Mods 1 und 2=Off
DCA2 Level=63 (Max)
DCA1 Level=egal
DCA3 Level=0 (kann als weiterer OSC genutzt werden, zum probieren zunächst 0)
DCA Mods 1-3= alle "Off"
Modes: AM=on, Sync=off,Restart Cyc und Osc= off. (sonst bleibt ein Dauerton bei den meisten Waves!!), VC und ENV=on
andere LFOs / ENVs: ist wurscht!
Nun das zweithoechste C (C2) druecken!!
Um den Loopsound -aber nicht den Rhythmus zu aendern: Wave von OSC1 ändern (zyklisch sollten sie sein! Manche anderen gehen auch) zB: Voice1 und der Klang
wird "digital / krisp", Bell macht ihn eher tonal...
Die ein oder andere neue Wellenform ist sowieso gut, wie zB Grit1 als OSC1 Wave, klingt nach FM!! (Die Modulation durch sehr schnelle LFOs oder
Hüllkurven- der OSC1 erzeugt geniale kaputte Spektren).
Rhythmusmuster aendern? Klar, selbe Einstellung wie oben aber OSC2 Wave auf zB: Snare stellen!!
Nun noch: Mods in OSC1 auf Wheel (...), Wert auf 63 und Modulationsrad drehen!!!
Jetzt druecken wir... -nein halt-, selber experimentieren...
wer sich inspirieren lassen will hoert sich evtl auf meiner (Consequence) CD "volition" an, was man da so machen kann...
(der "asiatisch" klingende Sound in Track 9 (Definition Factor f:*.*), der Syncsound im selben Stueck, oder auch Track 2 (>transform<) sind vielleicht eine Inspiration...

Noch besser ist, eigene Kreationen zu machen, wer Lust hat kann sie mir schicken... (Email, s.o.).. aber als Audiofile!! (kein SQ mehr da, ders abspielen könnte! ich habe sie auf einem Microwave XT nachgebaut - natürlich nicht die Drumsamplebasierten Sachen!)
Im Modes Menue kann ähnliches mit SYNC erreicht werden (andere Waves nehmen...), die typische Pitchmod (OSC) ist natürlich noch zusaetzlicher Ohrenschmaus!

ja.. zum Glück konnte ich eine Menge von den SQ80 (sync)sounds im Microwave XT nachbauen über die wahnsinnig effektive Methode SQ->Hirn->XT .. :-) .. aber diese "ConseQuencer"-Sounds.. das bleibt dem (E)SQ als Besonderheit..
kleine Bemerkung am Rande: es gibt ja noch interessante Dinge, die man mit dem SQ80 machen kann zB mit dem SQ80 OS, das macht Rainer Buchty mit seinen SQ80's: www.buchty.net/ensoniq/index.html
bei älteren ConseQuence und Volition tracks sowie seitenprojekte älteren datums ist der SQ809 bzw. ESQ1 zu hören.. einige auf unter audio data auf: www.consequence.info oder den CDs. Sehr viele ESQ und/oder SQ80 sounds gabs hier cybotech , und hier Consequence (volition)..
